Puerto Ángel at a glance
Puerto Ángel is a fishing port on a bay of the Oaxaca coast. Older official figures put the Zipolite beach roughly 3 km west of it, so the two are close neighbors. The state tourism page lists four beaches: Playa del Muelle, Estacahuite, Boquilla and Mina. Boat rental and kayaks are listed at Playa del Muelle.
The harbor is a place where boats come and go. Do not use the boat channel as a swimming area, and keep clear of moving boats. This site is an independent guide and is not run by the port, the municipality or any boat operator. Prices and departure times change, so ask on the spot.

The beaches of Puerto Ángel
Four names from the state tourism page.
| Beach | What is listed | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Playa del Muelle | Boat rental and kayaks | Next to the pier and boat traffic |
| Estacahuite | Named beach | Ask locally about the water |
| Boquilla | Named beach | Ask locally about the water |
| Mina | Named beach | Ask locally about the water |
The tourism page names the beaches and the rental services but gives no fees or opening hours. Wave height, currents and access change with the season and the swell, and the page does not call any of these beaches safe for swimming. Check conditions with locals before you go in.

The only Puerto Ángel listing we found starts from Huatulco hotels, so it suits you if you are staying there rather than in Zipolite.

What to know before you board.
Boat rental and kayaks
Boat rental and kayaks are listed at Playa del Muelle. Agree on the price, the length of the trip and the pickup point before you leave. Ask whether life jackets are provided. Public pages do not show prices, minimum group sizes or harbor fees.
Whale watching
An approved zone between Puerto Ángel and Mazunte ran from 15 December 2025 to 31 March 2026. That is the last season with published dates, and it has ended. Puerto Escondido and Huatulco closed earlier, on 21 March 2026. Confirm the dates for 2026/27 before you plan. No operator can promise a sighting, and a good boat keeps its distance and does not chase the animals.
Dolphins and other wildlife
Ask the operator which distance rules the boat follows. No single distance applies to every trip, so rely on the crew and on your own judgment, and keep noise and speed down near animals.
Port status
The Mexican Navy publishes whether ports are open or closed. Check it on stormy days, and when a hurricane or high swell is forecast, expect trips to be canceled.
Staying safe and choosing the season
Points that apply to the whole coast.
Know the flags
The Oaxaca safety authority explains the flags as green for favorable conditions with continued attention, yellow for caution and avoiding unnecessary entry into the water, and red for no entry into the sea. That statement came from a report on other beaches, so it tells you what the colors mean, not today's flag here.
Take the surf nearby seriously
On 1 June 2025 the authorities reported a search for a tourist after a drowning report near Playa del Amor at Zipolite, with lifeguards and rescuers from Zipolite, San Agustinillo and Mazunte taking part. Treat every open beach on this coast with care.
Drier months
Station data from Puerto Ángel for seven years between 2017 and 2025 show December to April as clearly the driest months, with under 2 mm of rain on average. Most rain falls from May to October, and September is the wettest at about 246 mm. The sample is short and is not an official climate norm.
Weather and best time →Storm warnings
On 21 September 2026 the state civil protection office warned of waves of 2 to 3 m and possible rip currents along the coast because of Hurricane Polo. Boat trips are often canceled in such conditions.
Getting there and planning
Puerto Ángel works as a half-day trip from Zipolite. For the airports, buses and taxis on this coast, see the travel page. Cash is the safest way to pay in a small port, and cash machines in the area can fail.
The US State Department rates Mexico at Level 2, exercise increased caution (29 May 2026). The German Foreign Office updated its Mexico advice on 19 October 2026 and warns of higher risk on night drives away from toll highways. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November.
