Zipolite Beach at a glance
Playa Zipolite is the main beach of the village. According to older figures in a state congress record, it is roughly 2 km long and about 3 km west of Puerto รngel. The same record describes strong surf and dangerous sea currents. Treat it as a beach for walking, sunsets and careful wading, not as a safe swimming pool, and not as a beach where small children should swim.
The beach is also known for its clothing-optional tradition. The customs and the open questions around that status are covered below. Ask locally about parking and any fees instead of assuming.

Surf and currents: what to do
The sea is the main risk here. These habits matter more than any single swimming spot.
No stretch is safe by default
No part of the beach can be called a guaranteed safe swimming zone. On 1 June 2025 local lifeguards and rescuers from San Agustinillo and Mazunte joined a search after a reported drowning near the link to Playa del Amor. Do not read any quiet-looking day as permission to swim out.
Look at the flag first
Check the flag on the day before you get wet, and stay out of the water on red. When Hurricane Polo passed offshore, a coastal warning on 21 September 2026 expected waves of 2 to 3 m and possible rip currents.
Stay shallow and stay together
Wade rather than swim, keep your feet on the sand and go with another person. If a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the shore, not against it, and signal for help.
Ask the lifeguards
Lifeguards work on this beach, but do not count on one at every stretch or at all hours. Ask where they are posted and where they advise against entering. Avoid the water after drinking or at dusk.

What the beach flags mean
Definitions from Oaxaca's safety authority, published in June 2026 for neighboring coastal municipalities.
| Flag | Meaning | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Favorable conditions | Stay alert, even so |
| Yellow | Caution | Avoid unnecessary entry into the water |
| Red | Entering the sea is forbidden | Stay out of the water |
| No flag | โ | Ask a lifeguard before you enter |
The notice explains what the colors mean; it does not tell you which flag is flying at Zipolite today. Look at the beach itself.
Zipolite nude beach: how clothing-optional works
Zipolite is known as a beach where clothing is optional. Clothing is expected in the streets, in restaurants and in shops,. Hotels can set their own house rules, so ask when you book.
- Ask before you photograph. Take pictures of a person only with their clear consent.
- Respect other people's choice. Nobody is obliged to undress, and nobody should be stared at.
- Mind the legal picture. A 2024 state congress record recalls municipal recognition in 2016. A 2026 travel portal says nudity is only tolerated by custom and rests on no formal law. Both statements exist, so behave as a guest and follow local requests.

The Encuentro Nudista festival
The state tourism site announced the 2026 edition, the 11th, for 29 January to 1 February 2026, with music, calendas (street processions), yoga and workshops. An older state page that lists 2 to 5 February belongs to the 2023 edition, not a current date.
For January 2027, a local portal lists 28 to 30 January, while the event's own website lists a camping stay from 27 January to 1 February. These are different offers, not necessarily a conflict. Confirm the program, dates and prices with the organizers before you book travel.
Practical tips for your visit
- Bring cash. Many businesses take cash only, and cash machines can break down. Pochutla has more banking options.
- Plan around the sea. Check the flag before you decide how to spend the day, and have a backup such as a walk to Punta Cometa for the sunset.
- Look for calmer water elsewhere, with care. State tourism describes San Agustinillo as having small to medium waves. That is a comparison, not a safety guarantee, and the warning of 21 September 2026 covered the whole coast.
- Pick your base. The beachfront, the hillside and Mazunte feel different. See where to stay.

Zipolite Beach: frequently asked questions
Is Zipolite beach dangerous?
The sea can be. A state congress record describes strong surf and dangerous currents, and a June 2025 search operation after a reported drowning shows the risk. Wade only, check the flag, and never swim alone.
Is nudity required on the beach?
No. Clothing is optional, so you decide. Do not photograph people without their consent, and wear clothing in the streets, restaurants and shops.
Is nudity legal in Zipolite?
Sources differ. A 2024 congress record recalls municipal recognition in 2016, while a 2026 travel portal calls it custom-based tolerance without a formal law. This guide cannot give a legal guarantee, so follow local customs.
When is the Encuentro Nudista?
The 2026 edition ran from 29 January to 1 February. For 2027, a local portal lists 28 to 30 January and the event website lists a camping stay from 27 January to 1 February. Confirm with the organizers.
Is there a safe swimming spot?
No source guarantees one. A calmer beach nearby, such as San Agustinillo, still needs the same care. Ask the lifeguards on the day.
