Zipolite weather in one view

Daytime highs on this coast sit between about 33 and 34 °C in every month, and nights stay between about 22 and 25 °C. Temperature does not decide the season here. Rain does. The months from December to April are close to dry, and the months from May to October bring most of the year's rain, with the heaviest falls in June, September and October.

The figures below come from the national weather service station at Puerto Ángel, at 84 m above sea level and a short distance from Zipolite. They are monthly averages from seven years between 2017 and 2025. That is a short series and not a 30-year climate norm, and it describes Puerto Ángel, so Zipolite can differ in detail. Use it to compare months, not to predict a given week.

A few wet years can push a short series up, so treat single months with care. November still averaged 57 mm, so it is not guaranteed to be dry. Some local sources call September to June the dry season. In these measurements, June, September and October were among the wettest months.

Best time to visit

A judgment based on the table, not an official ranking.

December to April: the driest stretch

Almost no rain, hot days and the coolest nights of the year in December and January. This is the simplest period for beach days, sunsets and day trips. Whale watching in the 2025/26 season ran from 15 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 between Puerto Ángel and Mazunte, and to 21 March 2026 at Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. Check the 2026/27 dates before you plan around it.

November: the edge of the rains

The rainfall has dropped, but 57 mm on average means showers are still possible. It is also the last month of the hurricane season, which ends on 30 November.

May to October: rains and storms

Rain arrives in May and peaks in June, then again in September and October. The hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November in the eastern Pacific. It is a different season from the Atlantic one, which starts on 1 June. Expect rough sea and cancelled boat trips on bad days, and keep your plans flexible.

Turtles and festival

Press reported six arribadas of the 2026/27 turtle season at Playa Escobilla by 17 September 2026. They happened before that date and cannot be predicted for a visit. Dates of the 2027 nudist festival differ by source: a local portal gives 28 to 30 January 2027, while an event site mentions a camping stay from 27 January to 1 February 2027. The last confirmed edition ran from 29 January to 1 February 2026. Confirm the dates before you book.

Storms and the sea

Hurricane Agatha made landfall on 30 May 2022 as a category 2 storm, about 10 km west of Puerto Ángel, with sustained wind of 165 km/h around 4 p.m. Hurricane Erick made landfall on 19 June 2025 as a category 3 storm in western Oaxaca. That was not a direct landfall in Zipolite. Both are past events and say nothing about the state of buildings or supply today.

On 21 September 2026 the state civil protection agency warned of indirect effects of Hurricane Polo, with waves of 2 to 3 m and possible rip currents along the coast. That was a warning for that day, not a standing closure. Surf and currents at Zipolite are a risk in every season. The beach flags mean: green, favorable conditions but stay alert; yellow, caution and avoid unnecessary entry into the water; red, no entry into the sea. A flag in one town does not tell you the flag in another. Read the Zipolite beach guide before you swim.
