Puerto Escondido as a trip from Zipolite

Puerto Escondido lies west of Zipolite on the same Oaxaca coast. A local travel portal (August 2026) gives about 70 km and about 1 hour 25 minutes by road between the two. Those are rough figures without fixed start and end points, so add time for traffic and stops.

This page is a guide to a day or evening out from Zipolite, not a full city guide. It covers the two things the state coastal route highlights here: surfing at Zicatela and boat trips on the lagoons. If you arrive by air, the Puerto Escondido airport (PXM) is a common entry point for Zipolite as well, as the getting there guide explains.

Zicatela: a surf beach, not a swimming beach

What the coastal route says, and how to read it.

The state tourism route along the Oaxaca coast lists surfing and boogie boarding at Zicatela. That tells you what the beach is used for. It does not tell you the water is suitable for ordinary swimming. Treat Zicatela as a place to watch the surf, walk the beach and see the sunset, and go into the water only if you are experienced and know the conditions that day.

The same caution applies along the whole coast. In Zipolite itself, authorities describe strong surf and dangerous currents, and a search for a missing swimmer near Playa del Amor was documented on 1 June 2025. If you plan to swim anywhere on this trip, read the Zipolite beach guide first and watch the flags, where they are flown: green means conditions are favorable but stay alert, yellow means caution and avoid unnecessary entry into the water, red means do not enter the sea.

Manialtepec lagoon

The state coastal route names the lagoons of Manialtepec and Chacahua as places for boat trips, mangroves and wildlife watching. Manialtepec is the one nearest to Puerto Escondido. Boat trips here are guided, so you book a tour or arrange a boat locally and do not go on your own.

One operator sells an evening bioluminescence trip on Manialtepec. Its Mexican listing shows a price of 800 without a clear currency, start times of 5:30 and 6 p.m. and no clear statement on transfers, so confirm the currency, the meeting point and whether transport from Zipolite is included before you pay. A regional operator also offers a private boat and guide for the same experience. The glow cannot be promised and depends on the night. Do not assume that swimming in the lagoon is allowed. Ask the guide.

Planning the day

The return is the part to settle first.

Fix the way back before you go

An evening trip ends after dark, and the road back is about 1 hour 25 minutes. Bookings that list no transfer from Zipolite leave the return to you. Agree a ride in advance, or plan to stay the night in Puerto Escondido. Bus or taxi hours late in the evening are not guaranteed.

Night driving

The German Federal Foreign Office (update of 19 October 2026) warns that the risk is especially high on overland trips at night and away from toll motorways. Local reports and instructions should be followed, and roadblocks should not be forced. Day travel is the simpler choice.

Whale season

For Puerto Escondido the approved whale watching season in 2025/26 ran from 15 December 2025 to 21 March 2026, which is earlier than the stretch from Puerto รngel to Mazunte (to 31 March 2026). Check the dates for the 2026/27 season before you plan a trip around whales. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Cash is widely used on this coast and ATMs can fail. Bring enough pesos for the boat, the guide and the ride back.
