San Agustinillo at a glance

San Agustinillo is a small beach village on the Oaxaca coast between Zipolite and Mazunte. The state tourism office describes it as a neighboring beach about 5 minutes from Mazunte, with small to medium waves and surfing and snorkeling on offer. The 5 minutes have no defined starting point, so read them as a rough idea and not as a timetable.

The word calm in the page title is a comparison with Zipolite, not a safety promise. The Pacific here is open water, and conditions can turn quickly. This site is independent and is not run by the municipality or any operator. Check current conditions on the day.

How to read the water

Habits that help on any beach on this coast.

Know the flags

The Oaxaca safety authority explains the flags as green for favorable conditions with continued attention, yellow for caution and avoiding unnecessary entry into the water, and red for no entry into the sea. That statement came from a report on other beaches, so it tells you what the colors mean, not which flag flies here today.

Respect storm warnings

On 21 September 2026 the state civil protection office warned of waves of 2 to 3 m and possible rip currents along the coast because of Polo. After storms or swell far offshore, keep out of the water even if the sky looks clear.

Ask locally

Ask your lodging or a surf school about the day: where the waves break, where currents pull and whether anyone is on duty. Do not assume a watched section, a fixed schedule or a safe zone for children.

Do not go in alone

Swim only where others are nearby, stay within your depth and leave the water if the waves grow. Never swim at night or after alcohol.

What to do in and near San Agustinillo

The beach is the main attraction. Surf and snorkel offers exist, but public pages do not show prices for lessons, boards or sun beds, so ask before you book. Parking and entry fees at the beach are also not published.

From here you can reach Mazunte in a few minutes for the turtle center and the walk to Punta Cometa. Zipolite and its sunsets are next door. A day trip to the Ventanilla lagoon shows birds, iguanas and crocodiles. The cooperative there lists daily opening from 8:00 to 17:00.

Bring cash, since small shops and boats often do not take cards, and cash machines in the area can fail. Carry water, a hat and a flashlight if you plan to walk back after dark.

When to go

Season changes the water as much as the weather.

Drier months

Station data from nearby Puerto Ángel for seven years between 2017 and 2025 show December to April as clearly the driest months, with under 2 mm of rain on average. Most rain falls from May to October, with September the wettest at about 246 mm. November is not guaranteed to be dry. The sample is short and is not an official climate norm.

Hurricane season

The Eastern Pacific season runs from 15 May to 30 November. Storms far offshore can still send high waves and rip currents to this coast, as the warning of 21 September 2026 showed. Check the forecast the day before you travel and again on arrival.
